In a purple box, Since 1978, the Center for Independence of Disabled, New York has worked to ensure full integration, independence, and equal opportunity for all New Yorkers with disabilities, by removing barriers to the social, economic, cultural, and civic life of the community. In another purple box, People with disabilities experience significant challenges trying to navigate an able-bodied society. CIDNY focuses on seven areas of advocacy: physical health, mental health, housing, education, employment, voting, and transportation. I’m reaching out today to invite you to our annual fundraiser to help us advance our mission, and because we have a great opportunity for you to join us.

Program and Speakers. Stay tuned for more information about performers and special guests. Key Note Speaker is Jumaane D. Williams. Pictured is a photo of Jumaane who is a black man against a white background wearing a checkered black suit and a red tie smiling. His biography says Jumaane D. Williams is the Public Advocate of the City of New York. Previously, he served on the NYC Council representing the 45th District from 2010-2019. Public Advocate Williams is a first-generation Brooklynite of Grenadian heritage. He graduated from the public school system, overcoming the difficulties of Tourette's and ADHD to earn a Master's Degree from Brooklyn College. He began his career as a community organizer at the Greater Flatbush Beacon School and later served as the Executive Director of NYS Tenants & Neighbors. There, he fought for truly affordable, income-targeted housing across New York City and State.
performances Marina Jansen is a multihyphenate Latiné and autistic performing artist who recently made their Broadway debut in “How to Dance in Ohio”. Originally from Maryland, Marina is a lifelong lover of the arts and is currently studying Music Theatre at Elon University. Hunter Hollingsworth recently made his Broadway debut in the new musical How to Dance in Ohio as a swing. An actor, singer, and performer from Mount Vernon, NY, Hollingsworth’s recent work includes Off-Broadway productions and gigs across Manhattan, including making the finale of Amateur Night at the Apollo. Ayanna Nicole Thomas made her Broadway debut as a principal swing in the new Broadway production “HOW TO DANCE IN OHIO”! Along with performing in musical theater productions, Ayanna, currently plays in local NYC venues entertaining her audiences with her love of jazz standards.
