Greenmarkets and Accessibility

SNAP/EBT & Health Bucks

If you use SNAP/EBT (formerly called Food Stamps), bring your card to the Greenmarket manager’s tent.  Tell the manager how much money you’d like to spend in the Greenmarket from your SNAP/EBT account.  The manager will swipe your card in an iPad, you sign, and then the manager will give you wooden coins to use to purchase any food (except alcohol) in the Greenmarket.

The market manager will also give you a $2 Health Bucks voucher that can be used to purchase fruits and/or vegetables  for every $5 that you spend on SNAP/EBT.  For $10 in SNAP/EBT, you will receive $4 in Health Bucks vouchers, etc.

SNAP/EBT can be used to purchase any kind of food in farmers markets (except alcohol); Health Bucks can only be used to purchase fruits and vegetables, not other food.  You will only receive Health Bucks in farmers markets and they can only be used in farmers markets (not in supermarkets).

With funding, in part, from the Christopher Reeve Foundation Quality of Life grants program, CIDNY has surveyed green markets throughout New York City to identify accessible entrances and Access-a-Ride drop off addresses. Our staff and volunteers completed these surveys in 2015-2016, and we try to provide the most updated information. Please check www.grownyc.org for the time of the year, dates, and times these markets are open.
