History of Deinstitutionalization

6 continuing education credit available for NYS LMHCs, LCSWs, and LMSWs upon completion of this 6 hour training.

Course Description :

History of Deinstitutionalization will provide participants the history of disability rights, the disability rights movement, and the deinstitutionalization movement in the United States and each movement’s tie to the civil rights movement. The participants will gain a thorough understanding of the historical events, influential figures, and policies that have shaped the disability rights movement and contributed to the advancement of disability rights and inclusion. The course will also examine the effects of deinstitutionalization and the impact of the closure of institutional settings on people with disabilities. Participants will gain knowledge of the historical challenges individuals with disabilities have faced and what challenges remain in the present day.

Objectives of the Course :

1. Mental health practitioners to gain multicultural disability competence (MDC).
2. Understand the historical and social contexts that have shaped the disability rights movement and deinstitutionalization movement and how these movements contributed to the advancement of disability rights and inclusion.
3. Understand technology’s impact on individuals with disabilities within a mental health environment. 
4. Identify key players in the Disability Rights Movement and the Deinstitutionalization Movement and their contributions to the movement.
5. Understand the impact of the Disability Rights Movement and the Deinstitutionalization Movement on the mental health field.
6. Evaluate the impact of deinstitutionalization on people with disabilities, including the closure of institutional settings and the challenges faced by individuals in transitioning to community-based living.
7. Identify current issues facing the disability community and ways to support individuals with disabilities in mental health care.
